Every Kid Healthy Week

Every Kid Healthy Week is April 24th-28th this year and it's time to celebrate! At Healthi Kids, we know that healthier kids have an easier time succeeding in school. This week highlights all of the work our schools are doing to promote nutrition and physical activity for their students. Through our partnership with the Rochester City School District, Schools 8, 17, 23 and 53 have been working hard this year doing just that. Some of their creative ideas include partnering with Foodlink's Curbside Market to bring fresh produce to their families every other week! Or putting on Math & Movement family engagement events that use physical activity to teach math! Want to join in on the fun? Make health and wellness the focus of your next school event for kids and families! Check out this toolkit for more tips on how you can celebrate the importance of school wellness this month. Walkability Action Institute 2017

In 2015, the Surgeon General issued a call to action to "Step it Up" to get people walking and create more walkable communities. So this April, a team from our area traveled to Decatur, Georgia for the Walkability Action Institute. Our team included staff from Common Ground Health, Genesee Transportation Council and the City of Rochester. We were one of ten regional teams from across the country who attended the four-day training on improving walkability in our community. The institute is a partnership between the Centers for Disease Control and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors. Over 10 expert faculty shared their ideas with us on how to build an action plan for our region to create walk friendly streets and communities. Together, the team will develop a Walkability Action Plan and go to work to make the plan come to life. Creating walkable communities is good for both the health of our city and the people in it!
