Play in the Rochester City School District:
Healthi Kids continues to be champions for daily recess in the Rochester City School District. For the last four years, Healthi Kids has advocated for the implementation of a 20 minute recess policy in the district's wellness policy and for the creation of a clause in the Student Behavior Resource Manual that prohibits recess being taken away as a form of punishment. In our recess observations, we've monitored how well the recess policy is working and seen that barriers still exist to its full implementation. For more information about our work in recess visit our Be Active Resource Page.
Healthi Kids has partnered with the Rochester City School District's Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) to engage RCSD School Board candidates on the issue of play. With primary elections happening September, 10, 2015 it is important for the community to understand where each candidate stand as they have authority to change the district’s policies and practices. Making our city playable is a benefit to the entire community, playable cities build community, foster economic development, creates healthy places, and supports children’s physical, social and emotional development. Nontraditional play infrastructure such as playful sidewalks and bus shelters, pop up playgrounds and colorful crosswalks allow for play to happen anywhere. Healthi Kids has worked with communities throughout Rochester to answer the question, "where do children play?" After talking to residents, neighbors, community members, and (most importantly), kids, Healthi Kids created five Playability Plans to highlight where play is happening, where we wish play was happening, and what we could do to make play better for everyone. Check out our findings and neighborhood recommendations below:
